What is LPG?

 

Liquefied petroleum gas or LPG (in English: Liquefied Petroleum Gas) refers to two hydrocarbon gases, butane and propane, or their combination, which are kept in a liquid state. Usually, small amounts of compounds such as propylene and butylene are also present in liquid gas. LPG is mostly used for heating applications and as fuel for vehicles. It is also used in the manufacture of sprinklers and as a cooling gas in cooling devices such as refrigerators and freezers.

LPG in the refinery is a by-product of natural gas refining and crude oil refining. The calorific value of liquefied gas is 46.1 megajoules/kg, which is higher than gasoline and fuel oil and it produces higher energy in the same weight, but its calorific value is lower in the same volume because it is a gas and has less density. Each liter of liquid gas weighs 500 to 580 grams and each liter of gasoline weighs 710 to 770 grams. This gas turns into a liquid at a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius under a maximum pressure of 8 kg/cm2; And at the time of production, it lacks color, smell, and even taste, and for greater safety, sulfur-containing compounds called mercaptan (which includes ethyl mercaptan and methyl mercaptan) are added to it.

LPG should not be confused with LNG (liquefied natural gas). LNG is actually natural gas (mainly methane and ethane) that is liquefied for easier and more affordable transportation. CNG is natural gas that has been compressed to occupy a smaller volume.

Home use and small industries

 

Most people call LPG liquid gas, which is sold in portable cylinders of 50 kg, 11 kg (home cylinder), 5 kg (large picnic), 2 kg (medium picnic) and 1 kg (small picnic) in Iran. (Before the cities were piped with natural gas, the main use of houses for stoves and when there was no electricity for lighting was liquid gas in a cylinder, which is used less in houses after the natural gas network is piped for each house)
In small industries where the industrial consumer cannot afford the cost of installing large gas tanks or does not have the place to install these tanks, he uses 50 kg cylinders that are portable and connects them to the gas piping of the building outside the building.

used in larger tanks that are

installed in the industrial production site. These tanks are filled by liquefied gas transporters directly from the refinery or liquefied gas distribution companies.
