Methyl tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE)
MTBE is
the common name for a synthetic chemical called methyl tert-butyl ether. This chemical is
a flammable liquid made from a combination of chemicals such as isobutylene and methanol. It has an unpleasant smell.
Methyl tert-butyl ether is a colorless liquid. The boiling point of this material is 131 degrees Fahrenheit. Its flash point is
18 degrees Fahrenheit and it is less dense than water and can be mixed in water.
Methyl tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE) Factsheet
Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is a flammable liquid that has been used as an additive for unleaded gasoline since the 1980s. MTBE increases octane and oxygen levels in gasoline and reduces pollution emissions. Because of concerns for groundwater contamination and water quality, MTBE is now banned or limited in several states. is also used in small amounts as a laboratory solvent and for some medical applications.
MTBE production process
is produced through the chemical reaction of methanol and isobutylene. Methanol is derived from natural gas and isobutylene is derived from butane derived from crude oil or natural gas, so MTBE is derived from fossil fuels. In the United States, very large quantities (over 200,000 barrels (32,000 MW) per day in 1999) were produced. At that time, this substance was used as a fuel additive.
Applications of MTBE
is used as a fuel component in gasoline engines. This chemical substance increases the octane number of gasoline and thus increases the good combustion of gasoline.
Application as an anti-knock agent (in internal combustion engines)
Used in small amounts in gasoline in the United States since 1979, it acts as an oxygenator to help complete combustion of gasoline, also reducing emissions of harmful exhaust gases and other gasoline components such as aromatics (e.g. benzene) are diluted. Prior to the introduction of other oxygenators and octane number enhancers, refinery companies chose MTBE for its compositional characteristics and low cost.
Alternatives to MTBE as anti-knock agents
Other oxygenators are available as gasoline additives, including ethanol and other ethers such as ETBE.
Ethanol is
being considered as a safe alternative to MTBE by interest groups in the US and Europe. In 2003, California became the first US state to replace MTBE with ethanol.
Another alternative to ethanol is
ETBE, which is
produced from ethanol and isobutene. Its production as an additive is similar to MTBE, but due to the high price of ethanol compared to methanol, the price of ETBE is also more expensive.
Higher quality gasoline is
also recognized as an alternative, so that additives such as MTBE are unnecessary. Iso-octane can be
used alone. production units can be
restarted to produce isooctane from isobutylene.
Application as a solvent
is widely used in industry as a safe alternative to diethyl ether (commonly used in scientific research). Because this substance has a lower explosive potential than diethyl ether. It is
also used as a solvent in scientific research. This material is also unstable against strong acids. And when exposed to bromine, it reacts strongly and is very dangerous.
Medicinal applications
In a procedure called contact dissolution therapy, is
injected directly into the gallbladder to dislodge gallstones.
Persistence and release in the environment
in very low concentrations gives water an unpleasant taste. is
often introduced into the groundwater aquifer by leaking underground storage tanks (USTs) at gas stations or by spilling MTBE-containing gasoline on the ground. The solubility in water and persistence of MTBE make it move faster than other components of gasoline and pollute waters.
is degraded by bacterial activity. In the appropriate type of bioreactor, such as a fluidized bed bioreactor, MTBE can be rapidly and cost-effectively removed from water to the point where it is no longer detectable. Activated carbon produced from skin
Coconut can absorb used MTBE and reduce MTBE to undetectable levels, although this level of reduction is probably only possible under ideal conditions. Currently there is no way to remove it
This substance is not provided at the place of pollution, which is able to reduce the concentration of pollution to the initial conditions (before it occurs).
According to IARC, a cancer research organization of the World Health Organization, is
not classified as a human carcinogen. can be
measured in water at concentrations of 5 to 15 µg/L.
